A flat roof is never perfectly flat. It is built with a slight slope so water has somewhere to go, and scuppers are one of the main ways that water actually leaves the roof surface. A scupper is an opening built into the roof edge or parapet wall that lets water drain off the roof, typically into a downspout or a collection system at ground level, instead of sitting on top of the membrane.
Why drainage matters on a flat roof
Scuppers give water a path off a flat roof. Without adequate drainage, standing water can shorten the life of the roofing system. Pooled water adds weight, keeps the membrane wet longer than it was designed for, and gives any small seam or flashing gap more time and more water pressure to turn into a leak.
For a commercial building, that makes drainage a structural and maintenance issue, not just a cosmetic one. A roof with too few scuppers, or scuppers that are undersized, clogged, or poorly placed, can hold water in low spots long after a storm has passed.
Keeping scuppers working
Because scuppers are openings, they can collect debris, leaves, and roofing granules over time. A scupper that is partially blocked behaves like a roof with no scupper at all: water backs up behind it instead of draining. Regular inspection of scupper openings, along with the rest of a flat roof's drainage system, is part of keeping a commercial roof performing the way it was designed to.
